The new Callender-Hamilton steel truss bridge over the Waiapu River at Rotokoutuku near Ruatoria was supported on the 38-year-old concrete piers of the old bridge. The southern abutment was found to be faulty, and a new structure reinforced with long steel piles was substituted. M.O.W. engineers report that due to earth movements this is now 1½ inches out of line, but no further trouble is expected.

Freak tides early in the month caused a sudden rise in the level of the Waiotu stream at Tokomaru Bay. Logs and debris were washed upstream by the tide, and residents using the water for irrigation found they were pumping salt water on their gardens.

Seven firsts, ten seconds, and two thirds at the Tokomaru Bay High School sports was the record of these members of the Matahiki family, David, Puhi, Henrietta and Alice.
