Blustery Opening For Yachting Season

Strong westerly winds prevailed for the opening day of the Gisborne Yacht Club on Labour Weekend Saturday.

Prior to taking to the water for their first race of the season, the yachties attended an opening ceremony in the clubrooms, where the harbour master, Captain I. McRae, declared the season officially started.

Although many of the yachts capsized in the blustery conditions, the race was keenly contested, with Alan Powell, of Wairoa, coming home first, with another cherub and two Finn class boats in close pursuit.
