Olympic Boxing Trials

The greatest line-up of New Zealand boxing talent to appear in Gisborne since the national championships were held here two years ago, met in the ring in the Y. M. C. A. stadium on a Saturday night last month.

They were battling for a possible trip to Tokyo, to represent their country at the Olympic games.

Among the packed audience were two national selectors, Dr David Tipping, of Wellington, and Mr Hamilton Tucker, of Auckland.

The results of the four trial bouts were: Heavyweight: N. Z. Champion Bill Kini, Auckland, defeated former champion John Logan, Greymouth, on points. Lightweight: Former champion Paddy Donavan, Hawkes Bay, defeated N. Z. Champion Manuel Santos, Auckland, on points. Featherweight: N. Z. Champion Toro George, Auckland, defeated former champion Wayne Franks, Auckland, on points. Bantamweight: N. Z. Champion Laurie Ny, Christchurch, defeated John Wright, Manawatu, t. k. o.
