Maori Culture Class

An integrated class of Gisborne women is at present attending a course of Maori arts and crafts, held weekly in the Waihirere Maori Club rooms under the tutorship of Mrs Maaka Jones.

At the classes, the women are learning the art of making their own Maori costumes and pois, as well as performing action songs, stick games, and handling pois.

Mrs Jones was chosen as tutor by a Maori Affairs Department selection committee, following a suggestion by an Adult Education officer in Auckland that the classes be conducted.

Similar courses are being held in Rotorua and Auckland.

The group hopes to compete in the annual Gisborne Maori competitions in August.
