Boys' High Athletics
A large crowd of spectators assembled at the Gisborne Boys' High School playing field on a recent Saturday to watch the annual athletic sports meeting.
Unpleasant wind and weather conditions did not favour fast times in the track events, but one record was broken: that of the intermediate javelin throw, by N. McLean, with a distance of 133ft ¼in, beating the existing record by more than two feet.
The meeting saw the introduction of a pole vault competition, which was keenly contested in two sections.
Starters in the intermediate 100 yards championship burst off their marks. They are, from right: J. Wauchop, G. Barbara (3rd), J. McGregor (2nd), D. Hill (1st), A. O'Connor, M. Lewis, and M. Brooking.
