Maori Arts and Crafts

During a recent visit to Gisborne of officers of the Arts and Crafts division of the Education Department opportunity was taken to organise a course for local people interested in Maori arts and crafts, with the idea that these people could act in an advisory capacity at schools in the district, in which there is a growing interest in Maori culture.

Among those who attended was Miss Mere Kururangi, head of the department's Maori Arts and Crafts section, who was most interested not only to teach, but also to learn from some of the district's authorities in this field. Others included Miss K. Brown, Miss Mihiata Fairlie, and Mr Don Campbell. The course was organised by the area organiser for Gisborne, Mr Roger Hardie.
