Poverty Bay Surf Champs

The annual Poverty Bay Surf Life-saving Championships were held over two days this year at Waikanae Beach.

The district's four clubs, Waikanae, Midway, Wainui, and Gisborne Ladies, competed in the carnival, the powerful Waikanae Club taking the majority of the titles.

The championships saw the last appearance of Mr Leo Clark, a stalwart of surfing in the district for many years, who in more recent times, has acted in a judging capacity at the carnivals.
