An anonymous Gisborne resident, who saved his threepences in a large lemonade bottle, cashed them in recently. The grand total came to 2,632 coins, or £32/18/0.

520 hungry customers satisfied their mid-day appetites with a hangi meal at the Central School's annual gala day last month. Pictured serving the long queue are Kau Kaparoa, Emma Koia, and Hau Ruwhia, the head cook. Of possible interest to "do-it-yourself-hangiers" and those who helped devour the meal, the ingredients were: 5 sheep, 5 pigs, 12 eels, 40 fish, 150lb potatoes, and 30 cabbages.

Mrs E. Phelps, of 24 Atkinson Street, pictured with an English Ecuim bee plant, which has grown in her garden to a height of 7ft 4in. Covered with bright red flowers, the "elephant trunk", as it is commonly known, is considered an oddity as they are normally much smaller and have blue flowers.
