Hospital Garden Party
Fine weather favoured the garden party organised by Cook Hospital to raise funds for the hospital chapel fund, and in the beautiful riverbank setting of the Morris Convalescent Home a thoroughly enjoyable programme made the afternoon memorable for the hundreds who attended. Upwards of £1000 was raised for the fund.
Novel money-making scheme consisted of an Ugly Man (and woman!) Board. If somebody put your name up, it was broadcast over the loudspeaker, and could be removed only by payment of a forfeit. Here Hospital Board secretary Jack Betteridge "scrubs his handle".
