Wellington East Coast Regiment Centenary

The Wellington East Coast Squadron RNZAC, a military unit with long associations with the East Coast, celebrates its centenary this week. Originally the Napier Volunteer Cavalry, it has had a number of changes in title through the years, but through most of its history has had close links with the Gisborne and Wairoa districts. We are indebted to Mr D. Croker, School Road, Gisborne, for these photographs.

Back in 1892 this interesting picture shows local volunteers in camp at the showgrounds. The only figure identified is "Jim McIntosh", indicated by a cross. No doubt many of those pictured served in the Boer War and the First World War.
