Jap Cargo-Whale Boat In Gisborne

An unusual visitor to the Gisborne roadstead recently was the 8600-ton Japanese freighter, Kyokko Maru, which spent several days here loading cartoned meat and carcases for Tokyo and Kobe.

A double-purpose ship, she is the mother vessal to a fleet of 12 whale chasers, operating in the Antarctic during our summer, and in the off-season, she becomes a refrigerated cargo freighter.
