Cage Birds On Show

Despite the clash with other shows in the North Island, the Poverty Bay poultry, Pigoon and Cage Bird Association's annual show had a large increase in entries. Many of the trophism were won by Hawkes Bay entrants.

Owing to the inclement weather during the period the show was held, public attendances were poor. How-over, the birds didn't seem to mind the weather, with the possible exception of the ducks who couldn't bear being caged while all that rain was falling. The sounds ware reminiscent of London's Crystal Palace, which, before it was burnt down, was used to stage some of the largest shows for cage birds ever held. Hundreds of pigeons cooed accompanied by twittering budgerigars and singing birds with the constant crowing of roosters as a descant. Sparrows, glad to gat out of the rain, chirped happily as they sped around the wool store scooping up the rare seeds with which the prize birds were fed. All in all, the show was a great success.
