Youth Contest Final

Philips' Mr and Miss New Zealand Contest attracted 22 district entrants, eight of whom appeared on stage at the Regent Theatre. The Olympic Pool Committee, acting on behalf of the sponsors, organised the Gisborne section of the contest, and in so doing benefitted by £150 from the proceeds of the film premiere, "The Thrill Of It All".

On the 1eft are pictures of the contestants while being questioned by compere Stewart Stubbs. Some of their answers were amusing. Brian Eastham didn't consider himself an average New Zealander because he was not a footballer. One of the girls raised a laugh when she said "I go skin-diving in the top half of dad's suit." Another considered that New Zealand should contribute to the "space race" by launching three-stage rockets.

The two finalists, Jenny Irvine and Brian Eastham, go on to Wellington for the North Island final.

We wish Jenny and Brian the best of luck with the hope that they win the prizes of a year's study overseas.
