For a small seasonal fee, any child with a horse or pony may Join the club and learn correct riding procedure and care and management of the horse. Children receive instruction from such well-known riders as the Hansen brothers and David Graham.

During the May holidays, a three day trek was organised by the Gisborne Pony Club with the club commissioner, David Graham, and Peter Mathews in charge. The rids took them across country to Rimuroa Station, where they stayed overnight in the woolshed, and thence over the hills to Pukeakura Station in the Waimata Valley for the second night, returning to their starting point on the third day.
