National Orchestra

A rare musical treat for the classical-minded came to Gisborne earlier this month It was the National Orchestra here to play a one-night season at the Opera House. Wielding the baton was Guest Conductor Alceo Galliera. Little known until recently, Galliera achieved world recognition at the Lucerne International Festival. Working without a score he was particularly impressive and brought the best out of the orchestra in Stravinsky's Firebird Suite.

New Zealand, with her small population, is fortunate in having an orchestra comparable with those overseas and of a very high standard which constantly attracts leading conductors. There are 74 members plus baggage masters etc. When the cost of running such a large orchestra is considered it is easy to understand why it is rarely seen in Gisborne.
