The "Wild Horse Race" contributed more than its share of thrills to the Poverty Bay Stampede rodeo at the Showgrounds. Released from the chute, horses had to be held by two helpers while the riders "saddled" them with a strap and handgrip. This was much easier said than done. The horse in the foreground, after falling flat on his back, broke away from his captors and charged through the mob of cowboys (out of sight at left), injuring one. At left, a competitor is trying to saddle and mount his horse, and at far right, the judges await arrival of winner of this heat (if any).

Back Cover. Visitors to Gisborne during the holidays had much praise to offer for the bright and colourful lighting in Gladstone Road.
