Busy Public Relations Officer

Gisborne's second Public Relations Officer, Mr John Burland, who took up office late in November of last year, soon found himself a very busy man in his new job.

Official welcomes were extended to him by the youth of Gisborne at a dance in the War Memorial Hall (above), and by the chairman of Greater Gisborne, Mr Hugh Bodle (left), at a public meeting in the P.R. Office. In the background is the Deputy Mayor, Mr Ray Crosby, who welcomed him on behalf of the City Council.

During his two months in Gisborne, Mr Burland has energetically applied himself to his many tasks, the prime one of which was the Poverty Bay Stampede. He is pictured below (at right) presenting prizes to place-getters in the stampede poster competition, who are from right: Rosemary Stokes (1st), Jocelyn Hough (2nd), and Brian Bugden (3rd). Others in the picture are, at left, Miss W. Lysnar and Mr A. Barns-Graham (organisers in conjunction with Greater Gisborne), and at rear, some of the thirty entrants in the competition.
