The Changing Face Of Gisborne City Grey Street Corner As It Will Look In Two Years

In two years, the Grey Street-Gladstone Road corner will have added to its grandeur another modern five-storey structure... the Government Life Insurance building.

The combination of the T. and G. building, which was officially opened yesterday by the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, and the new Government Life one, will without question make the intersection the most impressive in the city.

The construction of the new building has been under taken by the Palmerston North firm of J. L. McMillan and Co., who hope to have it completed late in 1964.

In the past, the site of the T. and G. building was occupied by an old wooden one, which is pictured at left about the turn of the century when it housed the thriving business of E.C.A. Reynolds. It remained intact until early in 1961, being occupied by Wildish's Auction Mart (right), when it, and the building alongside, were demolished to make way for the present structure.
