Emergency In Wairoa

A state of emergency was declared in the town of Wairoa on a recent Saturday morning after it had suffered "severe bomb damage" from four Rnzaf Canberra jet bombers which "strafed" the area for a little over five minutes.

With the planes' departure, the town's civil defense organisation swung efficiently into operation, under the observation of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr F. L. A. Gotz, and several military officials.

The damage was of course imaginary, but debris-littered streets, fallen powerlines, and a number of "casualties" gave the occasion a realistic atmosphere.

It is of interest to note that Gisborne city is to follow the example set by Wairoa, and will stage a similar exercise on Friday, December 7th.
