Bob Charles, the Professional

A gallery of approximately 450 witnessed an outstanding exhibition of power golf at the Poverty Bay golf course when New Zealand's top professional, and probably the world's best left-hander, Bob Charles, defeated Poverty Bay's Jim Parkinson, six and four, in a professional match sponsored by W.D. and H.O. Wills Ltd.

Charles, who was last seen in Gisborne as an amateur when he led Canterbury to victory in the Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament a few seasons ago, appeared to have gained much experience from his matches overseas, and impressed his spectators with his long powerful drives, some of which exceeded more than 300 yards.
