City Status Soon

×

According to information made available by the Government Statistician, Gisborne should reach city status within a few months. About April or May, it is expected that the population of the borough area proper will reach and exceed the 20,000 mark. There were only a few hundred residents when the borough was granted its charter in 1877. By 1911, the population had grown to 10,700. From then until the conclusion of the Second World War, population growth was slow, but in the past ten years an influx of nearly 5,000 has brought the borough to the verge of city status. Our photograph from the summit of Kaiti Hill shows the town from the east, with the factory of J. Wattie Canneries Ltd. in centre foreground, and the railway station at far left.
