Notable Visitors To Gisborne

×

A forthcoming visitor to Gisborne will be Dame Flora MacLeod of MacLeod, D.B.E., whose portrait at right was painted in 1951 by W. O. Hutchison, P.R.S.A. Members of the clan in various parts of the world subscribed to the portrait, which hangs in the hall at Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye. Clan and sept members in Gisborne are now making arrangements for Dame Flora's visit.

Another notable visitor scheduled to give lectures in Gisborne early next month is Sir Edmund Hillary, the world-famous Aucklander who was the successful conqueror of the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest. Our picture, taken by the editor of "Photo News" soon after Sir Edmund's return to New Zealand, at a private gathering of mountaineers in Christchurch, shows this most outstanding group of New Zealand climbers, past and present. In the back row, from left, are Mr George Lowe, of Hastings, Sir Edmund's co-New Zealander on Everest; Sir Edmund; and Mr Harry Ayres, chief guide at the Hermitage, who was largely responsible for Hillary's training as a climber. In front are Mr Peter Graham, chief guide at the Hermitage from 1906 to 1922, and Mr Alex Graham, both famous as mountaineers and for their hostel at the Franz Josef Glacier; and Mr Vic Williams, who was also one of the noted chief guides at the Hermitage.
