Summer Sports

October ushered in such a fine spell of weather in Gisborne that it could be said that summer started on Saturday, October 2nd. On that day, at any rate, the bowling season made its official start, tennis racquets were much in evidence, one or two hardy souls took a dip at Waikanae, and players sweltered through the final games of the football and basketball season.

Marching girls, typifying the spirit of summer, practise on the Intermediate School square. This is the Xclusive Gowns senior team, led by Miss Shirley Cochrane. It is a new team this season except for Miss Cochrane, and is being coached by Mr A. Ashwell. Girls get big kick out of drill, a phenomenon which puzzles bullring-hardened old soldiers.

The Riverside Ladies Bowling Club's season is launched by the club's patroness, Mrs H. H. Barker, Mayoress. There was a large attendance of enthusiastic players, and the club's greens looked to be in splendid condition. In group near Mrs Barker are Mrs Gibson (president), Mrs McKay (secretary), and Mrs Turbott (treasurer).

There were good musters for the opening of the bowling season on October 2, when the Poverty Bay, Gisborne, Kahutia, and Riverside Women's clubs all gave the season a good start. The weather was ideal. Our pictures, taken at the Kahutia Club, show (at right) the official group. From left, Mr V. Holst (club president), Mr E. R. Brown (president P. B. Bowling Centre), Mrs Holst, who sent up the first bowl, Mr E. Esquilant (Club secretary), and Mr L. Kendrew (E. C. Bowling Centre).

...and what better sport is there than chasing waves on a beach? These happy children were snapped on Tatapouri Beach on October 3, a fine day which drew out many hundreds of people for a picnic afternoon.

Talking of Tatapouri, this is Mr Ted Gilchrist, until recently licensee of the Tatapouri Hotel on the beach, who has now left the district, on the occasion of his farewell. (Photo, KKK.)

Final basketball game of the season was a friendly one Oct.2 between the Maori Affairs staffs of Rotorua and Gisborne. In the background, tennis players can be seen on the P.B. courts.
