Pictures from the Past

These panoramas from the slopes of Kaiti Hill show the rapid development which took place in Gisborne in the five years between 1871 and 1876. The top picture, taken in 1871, shows only two or three substantial buildings in the present business area. At the foot of the picture is the warehouse and wharves of Capt. Read's establishment. The lower picture shows how quickly the town area was dotted with buildings. Well up the Taruheru river a row of ten buildings indicates the site of the immigration barracks, while over in Whataupoko, the first residence has made its appearance.
