Around the Waterfront

Something was definitely missing. Yep, that was it. The old leading beacon at the end of the finger jetty on Wakefield Quay, the old beacon which provided many a photographer with a first-class foreground for a pic was gone. And it has been replaced by this new leading beacon, re-aligned on the new harbour entrance and placed up against the hillside (below left)

Is the old pilot station to be pulled down or is it to be reprieved? That question will be answered on Monday night when the harbour board has its next meeting. At the moment it's been condemned but a move is afoot to have it leased. And until such time as a permanent building can be erected on the reclamation, pilot staff will be housed in this rather scruffy-looking iron shed on McGlashen Quay. It looks much better inside after extensive renovations.
