Fire Guts Boat-Building Factory

×

The Nelson Fire Brigade had some anxious moments when it was called to quell a blaze which gutted the boat-building firm of Curnow and Wilton at Port Nelson last month. The building was only 50 yds from a petrol storage tank, and although this and other tanks were never threatened, the situation at the height of the fire was by no means without concern. The brigade, however, is to be congratulated on the efficiency with which it brought the blaze under control. It could not, however, save a partly-built 57ft trawler being built for fisherman, Peter Ballantyne. This dramatic shot of the burning building was taken . minutes after the blaze was at its height.

Nobody could ever accuse Alan Samuels or dereliction of duty – he was married that afternoon and left his bride and wedding party at Stoke to attend the fire.
