Best Laid Plans...

The fund-raising campaign of the "Red Lady" (Gloria Longley) was dealt a rather severe blow by the elements last month when heavy rain caused the postponement of the Tahuna Beach gold rush and all but washed out the hangi which was to have followed the gold rush. Little harm was done in postponing the gold rush, but the weather wrecked what could have been a great money-spinner in the hangi. Members of the Wakatu Maori Cultural Group worked like beavers on the project, but few braved the weather to eat out at Tahunanui. Much of the huge quantities of meat was sold to those who did attend, but the day was a big disappointment to all concerned.
