Starting yesterday, all freight trains between Gisborne and Napier are being hauled by oil-burning locomotives. Tenders on engines hold about 1400 gallons of fuel oil, use about 760 gallons on Napier-Gisborne run. (Picture of oil-burning Ja locomotive from R. Hepburn).

Phil Howard and Des Barber had a good morning along Waikanae Beach recently when they caught about 50 assorted fish, including 18 snapper, some of which are seen here.

Gisborne recently had a short visit from the wife of the Governor-General, Lady Cobham, snapped here at Darton Field on her way north by aeroplane, vith her companion.

Michael Ivess, son of Mr and Mrs R. Ivess, Waimata Road, holding the fine Maori stone axe vhich he accidentally found at the site of an old Maori pa at Makarori Beach. The axe is 9in. in length and is a good example of Maori craftsmanship.

Stephen, son of Mr and Mrs E. V. Durston, Matatwhere, who was champion baby at the Matawhero sports baby contest. Stephen is seven months old.
