CRICKET COACHING

More than 60 young cricketers took advantage of a chance of a lifetime to attend a free coaching clinic featuring New Zealand International Cricketers Stephen Flemming, Mat Hart, Phil Home and Willie Watson. The coaches are touring the country under the banner of Gunn & Moore (distributors of 1st class cricket gear, bats, pads, shoes, etc.) Locally the coaching clinic was jointly sponsored by Dive & Sports World and Guy & Dunsmore sports stores. The coaching was excellent with easy to understand instructions and (most importantly) why the exercise is practised. Basic things like which hand to hold the bat in when running between wickets, which foot to put beside the ball when running in for a fast fielding return, the runners 3 calls and a big KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL (their golden rule). Top marks to all concerned as this is the real way to encourage sportspeople.

The coaches demonstrate close fielding practise, in combination with the soft hands batting technique, watched by the keen young cricketers. Each section of the coaching allowed the kids to have a go, followed by a correction of errors and constant reminders to keep the eyes on the ball.

Mat Hart showed a variety of batting stances with the advantages & disadvantages of the style.

Hands on experience is the only way to learn and what better fielders to test batting skills against than the Gunn & Moore boys, experts in this field.
