National Womens Surfing

Local surfers made an impact on the Sunsmart Womens National Surfing Championships held in Gisborne. Day 1 was held in less than ideal conditions with small infrequent sets and onshore conditions at Makarori's Red Bus break. Day 2 held at Wainui's Stock Route under similar conditions except that the swell was noticeably larger offering contestants the opportunity to perform if they caught the right waves. 14 year old Holly Quinn won the prestigious National Open Womens Title. Ainsley Gunness won the Junior Division and was 3rd in the Open final with Amber Dunn placing 3rd in the Junior final. The Nationals were proudly hosted by Women on Waves, a local organisation, which has an enthusiastic committee who pull together providing lots of competitions, seminars and coaching clinics for the women surfers of this district. 20 local girls took part in this years Nationals with 7 of the 12 finalists represented Gisborne.
