Welcome to Wairoa

The town of Wairoa is situated on the banks of the Wairoa River, 98 km southwest of Gisborne and 118 km Northwest of Napier with a population of over 5200 serving a large rural area of similar numbers. It is with pleasure we welcome those living in this area, Nuhaka and Mahia to be a part of the Photo News from now on. We would appreciate any contributions or prior knowledge of events and remind you all photographs that appear in the magazine, as well as others, are available for sale at our office.

Built in 1882 by R.J. Gardner Jnr. is one of Wairoa's oldest wooden buildings, St Peters Catholic Church. Recently refurbished in a project supported by parishoners, friends and towns people, the church has been stunningly transformed with interior pinex removed, portals and window sills stripped and the exterior painted. The main body has been lined with locally milled Macracarpa and the Sanctuary with rimu. The original pews have been sanded and a Presidential chair and new Altar designed and created by Bill O'Connell and Son
