These Are The Trains

×

These are the trains which make vital links between Gisborne and the outside world. They travel every day over a slender ribbon of steel which in places along the precipitous East Coast clings precariously to the hillside, far above the Pacific Ocean. They haul passengers and freight across country as rough as any in New Zealand, and they do it day and night, year in and year out.
On the next three pages are further pictures in the story of how men and machines are working round the clock at Beach Loop, 22 miles south of Gisborne, to eliminate a threatened tunnel and provide trains with a new and safer route.
