From Mrs S. J. Orr, Oxford Street, comes this very old picture of Gisborne which must have been taken in the early 1860s. Coastal sailing vessels are shown in the Turanganui River, alongside what must have been the first harbour shed. On the opposite bank and just up the Waikanae Creek you can see, if you look carefully, a pit sawing establishment on the creek bank. Not a sign of bush on the flat or near hills, dispelling, for us anyway, the idea that the whole area was originally clothed in bush.

From Mr Lewis Binnie, Puha, comes this recent photo of the New Zealand war graves in Austria. Note how well kept they are. Visitors from this country to the cemetery are always welcomed and shown around the area.
