The Past Revealed

Under the guidance of museum director Elizabeth Shaw, members of the archaeology group of the Historical Society are undertaking an excavation on the site of a very old Maori village on the Murphy property at Muriwai. The undertaking entails a lot of careful work, including the removal of layers of soil which have built up over the years. The remains of an early Maori village are being revealed in the form of post holes, pits and hearths.

Miss Shaw points to one of the post holes in the clay floor which was the occupational level. Note the different layers on the side of the excavated square. These have been deposited on the site through.the years. Beneath the grass is the top layer of silt from a comparatively recent flood. The dark layer is a cultural layer of charcoal and cooking stones. This in turn lies on top of the former village.
