Long Term Service

Les Cribb, 55 Daphne, Street, has completed more than thirty years' continuous service at the Freezing Works. In that time he has seen many changes. When Les first started he had to buy his own gear. Now an allowance is made for the purchase of working apparel and gear. Wages in those days amounted to $25 per week which included Saturday mornings. Les spent his first two years as a labourer then went on to solo slaughtering. The change-over to the chain system saw a great improvement in the methods of killing beef and mutton.

All Together

Although they have met each other over the years at various times it was only recently that all the members of the Hollis family got together. In all it has taken 55 years for them to be together. Bob, the eldest, had grown up and was away working before Bill, the youngest, was born. And so you have it! From left, in front: Bob (Waipiro Bay), Nick and Arthur ("Chick") (Waipukurau), Sam (Matawhero), and, at back, Bill (Gisborne), Brownie (Te Karaka), Mary (Mrs Brown, Gisborne), David (Auckland), and John (Ohakune). They are the sons and daughter of the late Henry and Hiro Hollis, an old established Gisborne family.
