Celebrations Observations

Recent visitors to the city were Mr R. M. Robinson, first secretary to the Canadian High Commissioner, and Lieutenant-Commanders G. A. Bennett and A. R. Guy of the Royal Canadian Navy. They called on the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, and presented him with the plaque which will be mounted at the base of the totem pole, Canada's bicentenary gift to the city of Gisborne. The pole is due to arrive and be erected during the Cook Week celebrations. It is 20 feet high and weighs two tons, and has been carved by one of Canada's leading Indian carvers.
