Disaster struck the Gisborne-Wairoa rail link in August, 1957, when it was severed by a 16 acre slip at Waikokopu, a few miles north of Nuhaka. In all, 13 chains of line were carried away, and the Opoutama Road was buried beneath tons of spoil. It took a team of 19 bulldozers four weeks to clear the slip and reopen the rail and road.
