The Old Order Changeth
Some 90-odd subscribers in the Whangara district had their telephone service changed from manual to automatic with the cut-over to the new exchange. The actual cut-over took about two minutes but was the culmination of months of extensive work by the Post Office district engineers' branch.
The occasion was celebrated in true country fashion with a superb morning tea.
Mr R. H. Nicol, Post Office District Engineer, presses the button to initiate the cut-over.
Mrs Esme Tombleson, M.P. for the Gisborne district, makes the first call as she rings the Postmaster-General, Mr W. J. Scott.
The four girls who presented posies to the ladies in the official party are, from left, Betty Waihi, Elizabeth Paenga, Hannah Kokiri, and Tiawhi Waihi.
