The longest train to negotiate the upper East Coast line, containing equivalent to 100 four-wheel wagons, arrived at Gisborne station earlier this month. The train, which was hauled by two diesel locomotives, was conducting a braking test to find out if trains of this length could be handled satisfactorily on the steep grades of the line. The test was considered an unquestionable success. The rear half of the train is pictured on arrival at the station, with the last van just visible over Grey Street.
