Building Projects

In the next few years, the face of Gisborne will he further uplifted by a host of new and attractive buildings.

All the buildings pictured, other than the Base Hospital, were designed by the Gisborne firm of Glengarry, Corson, and Pilbrow.

The H. B. Williams Memorial Library, which was designed in association with Mr E. W. Armstrong, will be built on the site of the old British Empire Hotel, in Peel Street. Tenders for the building, Which is almost three times as large as the present library, and will cost up to £70,000, will be called in June.

The proposed new clubhouse for the Poverty Bay Golf Club, to be sited in the vicinity of the first tee, is now in the planning stage.

The impressive new headquarters of the Cook County Council, to be built on their Gladstone Road property adjacent to Sheridan Owen Motors, is to be tendered for this month.

The £35,000 Rugby Park grandstand, which will replace the old wooden structure destroyed by fire last month, will be completed in time for the Springbok's game on 30th June. Being built from concrete and steel by A. L. W. Martin, it will seat 1360, and will have full service facilities and a 1200 square foot reception hall underneath.

The maternity block of the new Base Hospital, in Upper Ormond Road, is at present in its preliminary stage of construction, and will be completed in three years.

The ultimate plan of the complete hospital, to be built in stages over a long period. At extreme right is the boiler house and laundry block, which will come into operation for Cook Hospital in six months. The architects were Haughey and Fox, of Auckland.
