A Round With Keith Fixton

In this issue we commence a feature which should prove of interest to all golfers, especially those on a higher handicap. Each month we will depict Nelson Golf Club professional, Keith Foxton, playing a hole on his home course. We will endeavour each month to get him into situations familiar to the higher-handicap golfer, and get him to extricate himself and explain how he does it.

No.1: 300 yds Par 4

Tading out of Trouble

With the pin to the right of the green on No 1, and behind a bunker, I tee up on the right of the tee to hit across the fairway to the left. This should open up the green to give a straight shot in to the pin (top). The pin is ringed, here.

Keith Foxton, Nelson professional since 1967; 1965-67, professional at Templeton Country Club; a leading Canterbury amateur player and member of Canterbury Freyberg Rosebowl team 10 years (and member of winning team on three occasions); North Canterbury champion 8 successive years; winner of 26 open tournaments in 2 years at height of amateur career.

Tee shot is hooked into trees and out of sight of the pin. I decide to play a fade shot. To play this shot the feet must be fairly close together, with the weight, head and hands well forward of the ball.

I must overclub, one to two clubs higher. Keeping the arc of swing low, I swing outside the line of flight, keeping the face of the club open, and hit firmly back to the inside. The dotted line "A" shows the path of the club, and dotted line "B", the path of the ball fading to the green.
Next month we will play the 2nd hole, 335yd hole (par 4), with Keith.
