Speed Knitting Contest

Nelson's four fastest knitters--discovered after a series of preliminary contests held in city stores--matched needles and flying fingers against the best in the South Island, in a regional final of a national speed knitting contest last month. None was placed in a final that produced some terrific speed from several southern knitters. Each contestant cast on 30 stitches and had to knit as many rows as possible in 15 minutes. The best performance was that of Mrs Joan Inwood (top left), who completed 34 rows. The regional winner knitted 43. Other contestants were Esme Hulse and Jenny Borlase (above centre and right), and Mrs Robin Hall (left). Mrs Gwen Rentoul, at right, was emergency but knitted to keep her hand in. Staff of Station 2ZN who helped with the final were John Holmes, Doreen Smith, Wayne Newth, Alastair McDougall, Bill Clements and David Cook (below).
