These two chaps earn their dough. They are bakers: Les Thomas, at left, and Jim Slaven (foreman) at Larson's, cake manufacturers. Les came to Nelson from Devonshire 10 years ago, where he owned his own bakery. For five years he managed Burton's Catering Company before joining Larsons. He is married with four married children - one in Texas, one in London, one in Nelson and another in Hawera. When not working Les likes to "potter" about the house. Jim has been with Larsons for 20½ years and reckons he's a millionaire baker' (poundage, that is). He also is married with a daughter at Richmond. He was overseas with 23rd Battalion in the Second World war and in his leisure hours follows all sports and gets into the garden.

Working at Nelson Fisheries is Anne Mant, who's married with a 10 -months-old girl, Danita. Anne went to waimea College and her interests outside her work and home include darts she plays for Seekers) and hockey (senior grade for Wakatu).

Two years ago Alan Eskrick, a surveyor with the Lands and Survey Department, came to Nelson. Alan is a keen outdoor type and when time permits he's into the mountains for skiing, mountaineering, canoeing and tramping.

Completing her first year as a hairdresser with the Maree Salon is Brenda Young, 17½ years old and single. Brenda was educated at Hamilton and is keen on sewing, dancing and music.

Scouting almost exclusively occupies the spare time of John Landels, a storeman with J. Shields and Co. John is Scoutmaster of the Southern Cross group, and he also retains, an interest in soccer, swimming and life saving.
