An aerial view of the reclamation taken in 1961. At that time the only buildings erected were the cool store and inspection depot for the Apple and Pear Board, the milk treatment station (right) and the engineering workshops of Dorman Engineering, under construction.

The biggest single shipment of logs to leave Nelson, 180,000 cubic feet of them, were loaded on the Kenei Maru. A resumption in the logging trade with Japan will revive this sight again.

In 1961, Bill Evans brought several token shipments of venison shot in the Karamea district to Nelson for export. Today, the export of wild pork and venison is big business throughout New Zealand.
