New Government Block Opened

The Minister of Labour, Mr Shand, opened the new Government building, in the grounds of the old Provincial Council Chambers, last month. The new block is the latest in the over-all plan for a Government block concentrated in this area. The building houses the Justice, Lands and Deeds departments and the Forest Service, all of which were previously accommodated in pre-fabricated buildings or the old Provincial Council Chambers.

Mr Shand unveils the plaque at the main entrance to the Monro State Building (the building was named after Sir David Monro, one of the earliest settlers in the Nelson district).

The Police Station in the background also forms part of the new-building plan (a new Justice Department block is to be built at a later date, probably on the site of the old council chambers).
