Beachcombers' Ball And The "Big" Sound

"Don't forget, we'll be playing at the midnight dance at the sports hall." This announcement, made at the surf club's beachcombers' ball, prompted us to offer our sympathy to residents attempting to sleep in the wee hours within a two to three hundred yards radius of the sports hail. The announcement was made on behalf of the Castaways, an ear-shattering Christchurch group whose highly amplified "sound" was deafning enough in the open air of Tahuna, Beach where it carried to the thousands of young people intent on enjoying themselves. But there were few dancers, the majority of the crowd being content to stand, watch and, whether they wanted to or not, listen.
