A year ago Nelson fishermen recommended to the Marine Department that there be a closed season -from the beginning of March to the end of May - for the taking of scallops. This action was taken in an effort to conserve the main scallop beds which are being rapidly depleted. Nothing has been done. We have been told that some scallop fishermen have given up this type of fishing because it is no longer lucrative and that the returns are getting smaller and smaller. During the three months recommended as a closed season, the scallops are not at their best, and the taking of them in that period is wasteful, according to fishermen. Your very urgent attention, Mr Scott.

Fears are held by residends of Wakefield Quay, and those with an interest in the Rowing and Yacht Club sheds, that when the cut (above) has been widened to its full extent, the quay is going to get a battering from storm seas. One man pointed to the build-up of shingle along Wakefield Quay as proof that already the strong current surging through the cut can do damage. The situation is expected to improve with the completion of a breakwater on the northern side of the cut.
