Catchment Survey Will Aid Industrial Progress

A comprehensive survey of the rainfall in the upper reaches of the Motueka River undertaken by the Nelson Catchment Board should prove of great value to the future industrial expansion of the Nelson province. It has already been announced that the proposed pulp and paper mill will draw its water supply from the Motueka River. An automatic water level recorder and 10 rain gauges have been installed in this area – the sixth catchment area being studied by the board. Because of the isolated nature of the territory under survey – much of it has not been mapped – supplies and men were flown in by helicopter. Readings of the gauges in such areas in the last four years have been taken by stalkers and others in the areas, and the board requests that this voluntary work be continued where possible.
