Boxing Tourney

The Nelson Boxing Association drew a big crowd to its first tournament of 1964 in the YMCA stadium. Gymnasiums from Lower Hutt, Christchurch, Westport, Blenheim, as well as Nelson and Waimea were represented. Feature bout of the evening was that between Olympic trialist Barry Cummings (Westport) and Paul Domney (Lower Hutt). In a very even contest Cummings won on a split decision. Another excellent bout was that between the former Australasian light-heavy champion, Joe Syron (Westport), who clearly out-pointed Neville Ford (Blenheim).

If the contestants (W.Carter, Blen, and P.Hammond, Wai) weren't wearing gloves this could be mistaken for a figure in a square dance.

After a particularly solid bout, Syron and Ford forgive each other.
