Firemen averted what could have been a major blaze, at St John's Methodist Church, in Hardy Street, recently. The fire started when painters were burning paint from the front wall and flame went behind the weatherboards. Our pictures show, Left, a fireman ascending the interior staircase, where boards were ripped loose to gain access to the fire and, Above, firemen perched on the high roof of the church to pour water into the wall

Nelson Wahines were treated to some unusual modes of transport when they raided their counterparts in Westport, recently. Chauffeur for the girls was Fred Green. In and on the vehicle are Beryl Stansbury, Colleen Hunt, Una Pike, Pam Wells, Shirley Newman and Margaret Haines.
